Are You Smarter than a Chimpanzee?

A recent report from a set of experiments done at Kyoto University in Japan had some startling results. Researchers Tetsuro Matsuzawa and Sana Inoue pitted a five-year-old chimpanzee named Ayumu against Japanese college students in a memory activity to determine whom would perform better.

The memory test consisted of numbers being flashed on a screen. Although the competitors proved to have similar accuracy, the chimp performed faster in the memory test than did the students. Surprisingly, when the number appeared on the screen for four-tenths and two-tenths of a second, the chimp earned a score of 80 percent versus the students’ 40 percent.

The researchers believe that these memory skills are becoming obsolete in humans as they enhance their language skills.

Minority-Serving Colleges Increasing Enrollment

The U.S. Education Department has released a study entitled “Characteristics of Minority-Serving Institutions and Minority Undergraduates Enrolled in These Institutions,” which indicates that schools that traditionally enroll minority undergraduate students have seen increases since 1984.

The study found that two- and four-year colleges with a minority undergraduate population of at least 25 percent increased from 414 in 1984 to 1,254 in 2004. In 1984, these schools enrolled 38 percent of all minority students, while the percentage grw to 58 percent in 2004.

Colleges that serve minorities grew by 32 percent in 2004, and in the past two decades since 1984 minority undergraduate enrollment grew 146 percent to 4.7 million.

The largest increases in minority undergraduate enrollment occurred at black-serving colleges, of which there are now 622 in comparison to the 200 that existed in 1984.

In 2004, Hispanic-serving colleges enrolled the most minority undergraduates with 26.8 percent. Black-serving colleges enrolled 15.6 percent of minority undergraduates. The rest of the pack included Asian at 7.5 percent, historically black colleges at 5.1 percent, other at 2.6 percent and tribal at .6 percent.

Minority Doctoral Degrees on the Rise in U.S.

According to the report “Doctorate Recipients From United States Universities: Summary Report 2006,” conducted by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago, 20 percent of the more than U.S. 26,000 research doctorates earned in 2006 were earned by minority groups.

There were 5,211 more minority Ph.D.s awarded in 2006, and 1,560 of those were earned by African American students. Doctoral degrees in general rose more than five percent in 2006. Both increases are record increases.

2006 saw a 12 percent increase in engineering and physical-science doctorates, many of which were earned by international students.

Thirty-three percent of research doctorates in the U.S. were earned by researchers holding temporary visas. The study found that most doctorates were awarded to females in 2006.

Elite U.S. Universities Consider Expansion

Popular, elite private institutions such as Yale, Princeton and Brown are looking into expanding to accommodate the rising number of applicants vying to be accepted into the prestigious universities.

Yale may increase its undergraduate enrollment by 650 openings, while Princeton has been in the midst of a 500 student undergraduate expansion. Schools like Harvard and Brown have hired nearly 100 new faculty.

Some fear that these expansions will lead to these institutions monopolizing the finest students. The schools respond by pointing out that they see the expansions as obligatory. For example, due to the number of high quality students these institutions feel it is only fair to give the students the opportunity to attend such elite universities.

Despite the positive aspects of the expansions, adding students can prove expensive to schools regardless of the new tuition payments if the universities have to provide financial aid.

Doctoral Degrees on the Rise in the U.S.

The National Science Foundation’s “Survey of Earned Doctorates” was just released and paints a mixed picture of doctoral degrees granted by American universities in 2006. Doctoral degrees were up five percent in 2006, which is the highest record to date with 45,596 total degrees awarded.

The highest increases were in the fields of science and engineering, with 1,865 more doctoral degrees awarded in those areas in 2006. This would be great news in terms of the country’s need to produce more science and engineering scholars, but the majority of the new doctoral degrees were awarded to international students. Students from outside the U.S. accounted for more than two-thirds of new Ph.D.s, and represented 43 percent of science and engineering doctoral degrees.

Americans Not Reading for Pleasure

According to a recent study released by the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) indicates that the act of reading simply for pleasure is declining in the United States.

The study found that 65 percent of college freshmen in 2005 read little or nothing for pleasure. Meanwhile, just 38 percent of adults reported in 2006 that they had read a book for pleasure the previous day.

From the perspective of NEA chairman Dana Gioia, this lack of reading is “probably the single most important social issue in the U.S. today.” He went on to say that, “we are no longer producing readers. We’re producing B.A.s and M.A.s and Ph.Ds.”

How often do you read for pleasure?

House to Review Higher Education Bill

The House Higher Education Committee passed a higher education bill that will be voted on by the House of Representatives in December or January. The bill has already been passed by the Senate and it will renew the Higher Education Act.

The bill will award grants to colleges that promote partnerships with companies and organizations. It will also challenge the fact that in many instances needy students are unable to get TRIO grants renewed.

If the bill passes it will establish federal higher-education policy for the next five years.

Foreign Students Enhance U.S. Economy

International students studying at American colleges and universities have kicked up the U.S. economy, according to a recent report released by the Institute of International Education. The net contribution to the U.S. economy by international students during the 2006-2007 academic year was nearly $14.5 billion. That’s $1 billion more than the 2005-2006 school year and is the largest annual increase of its kind ever.

The report indicates that foreign students studying in the U.S. consider the education they receive an American product. International students spent more than $20 billion on U.S. tuition, fees and living expenses in the 2006-2007 academic year. Less than a third of these students received major U.S. funding, as many international students opted for expensive programs that do not award scholarships.
