Employers Say New Grads Need More Real-Life Experience

The Association of American Colleges and Universities released a national survey of employers that hire a large number of recent college graduates.

While 65 percent of employers indicated that recent grads have the skills to succeed in entry-level positions, only 40 percent feel the grads have the skills they need to advance in their careers.

Employers ranked new graduates in 12 categories: teamwork, ethical judgment, intercultural skills, social responsibility, quantitative reasoning, oral communication, self-knowledge, adaptability, critical thinking, writing, self-direction and global knowledge.

The employers concluded that there need to be new ways to evaluate recent grads. Thirteen percent said transcripts are helpful, compared to 33 percent that said they are not. Seventy percent of employers indicated that students should be assigned advanced senior projects that showcase skills in writing, problem-solving and analysis. Meanwhile, 83 percent indicated that supervised internships would be beneficial to the evaluation of recent grads.

Employers seem to appreciate a great education, but they also expect recent grads to gain some hands-on, real-life experience in order to be successful in the working world.

GMAT vs. GRE

Some MBA programs are offering students a choice between taking the Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) and the Graduate Record Examination (GRE). Stanford University, MIT and Johns Hopkins University have begun to give students the choice, along with some other business schools, often on a case-by-case basis.

This is a controversial move in terms of the Graduate Admission Council’s requirement of the GMAT, a test they created, for admission to business school. However, students prefer to pay the $140 for the GRE as opposed to paying $250 for the GMAT.

There is a bit of a battle behind the story. In 2003, the GMAC ended its long partnership with the Educational Testing Service (ETS), and gave the job of producing and managing the test to Pearson. ETS runs the GRE test and has since revised it to be used at business schools.
Stanford will track the performance of students who took the GRE instead, and compare their success to that of students who took the GMAT.

Looks like it may come down to which test is the better indicator of success.

More Women Playing Sports, Fewer Leading Teams

While more women are participating in college sports than men, fewer women serve as coaches and administrative leaders, according to “Women in Intercollegiate Sport: A Longitudinal, National Study.” The study was conducted by Linda Jean Carpenter and R. Vivian Acosta, two professors from the Brooklyn College of the City University of New York.

The study found that today, 21 percent of college athletic directors are female. This is the highest percentage since the 1970s, but only two percent higher since 1998. Compared with the 90 percent in 1972, just 43 percent of women’s college sports teams are now led by females.

Eight percent of NCAA Division I schools have female athletic directors. Nineteen percent of Division II schools have female athletic directors, compared to 34 percent of Division III schools.

Research to be Done on Effects of Affirmative Action

Project Seaphe, the acronym standing for “Scale and effect of Admissions Preferences in Higher Education,” is a research consortium that will study the positive and negative effects of affirmative-action policies in higher education. The consortium, led by UCLA law professor Richard L. Sander, is comprised of 30 professors and graduate students.

The consortium will conduct about 18 separate studies with data it will collect from institutions of higher education, and hopes to present and discuss its findings in 2009.

2008 to Bring Student Loan Offender Sanctions

Despite having faded from the headlines in recent months, the student loan scandals of 2007 will remain very much a priority for the U.S. Department of Education in this new year.

In 2007, 55 colleges and 23 lenders were put on notice by the Federal Student Aid office (FSA) for questionable lending practices. According to Jonathan Vogel of Inside Higher Ed, those colleges and lenders that received letters from the FSA can look forward to more probing and actions taken by the Department of Education.

First off, more colleges and lenders will be cited for non-compliance as a result of reviews, which will be conducted by the School Eligibility Channel and the Financial Partners Eligibility and Oversight divisions of the FSA Program Compliance office. Both colleges and lenders can expect regulations to remain unclear until such time that the FSA has documented the new regulations.

Vogel indicates in his article that lenders are likely to find that the FSA will investigate lender relationships with colleges, as well as those with college affiliates. In addition, non-compliant lenders may discover they are facing corrective action by the FSA, including limitation, suspension and termination. Meanwhile, small colleges deemed non-compliant may face limited access to federal loan programs.

Stay tuned … this is going to get interesting.

2008 Poses Higher Ed Challenges for Congress

Congress will have a great deal on its plate when it returns this month, including the continuation of work on the Higher Education Act. The major areas of focus include the cost of college, accreditation and Internet piracy.

Regrading college costs, the House and Senate may create a bill that would rank colleges based on the amount they have raised in tuition and fees. The House may also deny funds to states that cut their higher education budgets, as well as provide schools that don’t raise their tuition with more Pell Grant aid.

The House and Senate will also haggle over whether or not to empower colleges to establish measures of student learning, on which accreditation is based.

When it comes to Internet piracy, the Senate would like schools to inform their students of piracy policies and consequences, while the House would also like colleges to establish plans to prevent piracy and to offer alternatives.

College Violence Forcing Policy Change and Debate in American Schools

The events that took place at Virginia Tech last spring have profoundly impacted the American higher education community. The VT shootings brought new attention to what schools should and should not do when faced with a violent emergency situation. American colleges and universities have been implementing changes and new policies in response to the violence and uproar over how the events were dealt with by VT.

Many schools have implemented new emergency management practices and policies, and hundreds of colleges have purchased mass-alert systems. What is still in question, however, is when to use those mass-alert systems.

Colleges and universities have also been debating how to maintain and protect student privacy, while at the same time ensuring their safety. It will be up to the Secretary of Education to make the distinction between privacy and safety concerns.

Student groups around the country have gotten involved with debates regarding gun control, with groups representing both sides of the controversy.

While colleges and universities grapple with these difficult issues and the country has done a certain amount of healing, the pain and fear that arose on the VT campus that spring day still remains.

Veterans Not Using GI Bill Benefits

According to the U.S. Defense Department, 95 percent of service members on active duty pay the $1,200 to sign up for the GI Bill, but 29 percent of those members do not take advantage of what the bill has to offer. Troops pay $100 per month over their first 12 months of service to become eligible for the GI Bill.

Service members must use their GI Bill benefits within 10 years. The Department of Veterans Affairs reports that last year, just seven percent of veterans who left the force before 1997 had used their benefits within the decade-long window.

The Department of Education states that during the 2003-2004 academic year, veterans were twice as likely as non-veterans to have not enrolled in a degree program. In 2006, veterans in college since 2003-2004 were more likely than non-veterans to indicate that they had no plans to earn a postsecondary degree.

The GI Bill provides service members with 36 months of benefits, which amount to about a four-year degree. The Department of Veterans Affairs reports that vets tend to use 17 months of benefits on average.

Apparently, many vets are opting for two-year degrees and certificate programs due to changes in life priorities. Some experts contend that the GI Bill doesn’t cover enough college costs and that the 10-year limit does not allow for the transition time soldiers need upon return from duty.

Many service members return from duty to face physical and psychological limitations, which could account for lack of enrollments and drop-out rates among their ranks.

Harvard Speeding up Ph.D. Process

Harvard University has implemented a new approach to make the process of earning a Ph.D. quicker. Two years ago the school decided to establish a plan that dictates that departments will lose one doctoral admissions slot for every five grad students who are in the eighth year or higher of a Ph.D. program. The new plan also included full financing for a year of dissertation work, as well as a rule dictating that students working on dissertations are not allowed to be assigned or to accept teaching positions.

The departments were given 18 months before the new approach was put into place so that professors could help get students finished with their Ph.D.s.

In 2005, 16 of the 24 humanities and social sciences departments providing Ph.D.s faced losing 33 admissions spots. In 2006, just 14 departments were in danger of losing a total of 23 admissions slots. Since the beginning of the new approach two years ago, humanities Ph.D.s grew from 71 to 99, while special sciences Ph.D.s grew from 95 to 110.

In the past five years, ninth-year doctoral students decreased from 8.5 percent to 4.5 percent. Now that the new Ph.D. approach has been in effect for a few years, Harvard may be approaching the end of the 10-year humanities Ph.D. path.

Candidate Donations Decrease, but Obama Receives the Most

According to the Center for Responsive Politics, a non-partisan group in Washington, D.C., the presidential candidates for next year’s election have been receiving fewer donations from academic institutions than during the 2004 election. Academic donations include those made by college administrators, faculty and other educators.

Thus far, the candidates have received a collective donation amount of around $6.2 million, compared to the $37 million in donations received by the 2004 presidential candidates.

Dem. Barack Obama has received one-third of the $6.2 million in donations, with $2.1 million. Dem. Hilary Clinton comes in second with donations totaling $1.6 million, while Rep. Mitt Romney has received $563,795. Rep. Rudolph Giuliani has been given $461,925 in donations, while Dem. John Edwards has raked in $351,261.

Harvard University, Stanford University, Columbia University, Georgetown University and the University of Chicago are the top five givers, respectively.
