The Association of American Colleges and Universities released a national survey of employers that hire a large number of recent college graduates.

While 65 percent of employers indicated that recent grads have the skills to succeed in entry-level positions, only 40 percent feel the grads have the skills they need to advance in their careers.

Employers ranked new graduates in 12 categories: teamwork, ethical judgment, intercultural skills, social responsibility, quantitative reasoning, oral communication, self-knowledge, adaptability, critical thinking, writing, self-direction and global knowledge.

The employers concluded that there need to be new ways to evaluate recent grads. Thirteen percent said transcripts are helpful, compared to 33 percent that said they are not. Seventy percent of employers indicated that students should be assigned advanced senior projects that showcase skills in writing, problem-solving and analysis. Meanwhile, 83 percent indicated that supervised internships would be beneficial to the evaluation of recent grads.

Employers seem to appreciate a great education, but they also expect recent grads to gain some hands-on, real-life experience in order to be successful in the working world.
