Minority-Serving Colleges Increasing Enrollment
The U.S. Education Department has released a study entitled “Characteristics of Minority-Serving Institutions and Minority Undergraduates Enrolled in These Institutions,” which indicates that schools that traditionally enroll minority undergraduate students have seen increases since 1984.
The study found that two- and four-year colleges with a minority undergraduate population of at least 25 percent increased from 414 in 1984 to 1,254 in 2004. In 1984, these schools enrolled 38 percent of all minority students, while the percentage grw to 58 percent in 2004.
Colleges that serve minorities grew by 32 percent in 2004, and in the past two decades since 1984 minority undergraduate enrollment grew 146 percent to 4.7 million.
The largest increases in minority undergraduate enrollment occurred at black-serving colleges, of which there are now 622 in comparison to the 200 that existed in 1984.
In 2004, Hispanic-serving colleges enrolled the most minority undergraduates with 26.8 percent. Black-serving colleges enrolled 15.6 percent of minority undergraduates. The rest of the pack included Asian at 7.5 percent, historically black colleges at 5.1 percent, other at 2.6 percent and tribal at .6 percent.
