Minority Doctoral Degrees on the Rise in U.S.
According to the report “Doctorate Recipients From United States Universities: Summary Report 2006,” conducted by the National Opinion Research Center at the University of Chicago, 20 percent of the more than U.S. 26,000 research doctorates earned in 2006 were earned by minority groups.
There were 5,211 more minority Ph.D.s awarded in 2006, and 1,560 of those were earned by African American students. Doctoral degrees in general rose more than five percent in 2006. Both increases are record increases.
2006 saw a 12 percent increase in engineering and physical-science doctorates, many of which were earned by international students.
Thirty-three percent of research doctorates in the U.S. were earned by researchers holding temporary visas. The study found that most doctorates were awarded to females in 2006.
