Doctoral Degrees on the Rise in the U.S.
The National Science Foundation’s “Survey of Earned Doctorates” was just released and paints a mixed picture of doctoral degrees granted by American universities in 2006. Doctoral degrees were up five percent in 2006, which is the highest record to date with 45,596 total degrees awarded.
The highest increases were in the fields of science and engineering, with 1,865 more doctoral degrees awarded in those areas in 2006. This would be great news in terms of the country’s need to produce more science and engineering scholars, but the majority of the new doctoral degrees were awarded to international students. Students from outside the U.S. accounted for more than two-thirds of new Ph.D.s, and represented 43 percent of science and engineering doctoral degrees.
