Arabic Now 10th Most Popular Foreign Language to Study in U.S.

Based on 2006 enrollments, the Modern Language Association of America conducted a survey of the most popular foreign languages studied by American students.

Arabic is the tenth most popular language to study at U.S. colleges and universities, up 126 percent since the last survey four years ago. Spanish is still the most popular language with 52 percent of students choosing to study the language. With 13 percent, French comes in second while German comes in at third with six percent. American Sign Language and Italian are tied for the fourth most popular language to study, followed by Japanese, Chinese, Latin, Russian and Arabic.

During the past four years, the study of Chinese has risen 51 percent, while the study of American Sign Language has grown by 30 percent. The study of Japanese has increased 27 percent.

Overall, studies of foreign languages in the United States has risen 13 percent.
