Report: U.S. Higher Ed Still in Trouble
“Education at a Glance 2007,” a report by the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD), will be released today. The report involves higher education in the 30 OECD countries, which includes the United States.
The report indicates that graduation rates in the countries is diverse, while enrollment rates have been rising. Korea, Ireland and Spain have experienced the strongest enrollment growth. Despite enhanced enrollment, the pay rates and unemployment rates of college-educated people have not risen. When it comes to the crucial sciences, most countries have experienced growth in graduation rates.
The report indicates that the U.S. has the “lowest survival rate” of the OECD countries due to the fact that only 54 percent of students enrolled in higher education in the country earn a degree. The U.S. tends to enroll younger students, but the number of U.S. workers between the ages of 25 and 34 with a science degree is significantly lower than in other OECD countries. And although the U.S, is still a leading attractive study abroad destination, the country is seeing a decline in international students.
