A report done by two assistant professors of management from DePaul University indicates that M.B.A. programs are missing the focus on “soft skills” that business employers are seeking. The “soft skills” include people skills such as leadership and communication.

The researchers analyzed 8,600 managers in 2006 from a U.S. Department of Labor database, and compared it to their own study of 373 M.B.A. programs and responses from 118 business-school administrators.

The report found that students in M.B.A. programs are not interested in taking courses that focus on soft skills because they do not believe that those skills are of great importance.

Those students could not be more mistaken. Practitioners conveyed to the researchers that the most important skill an M.B.A. student should learn is decision-making and the processes that lead up to it. While students tend to believe that soft skills will not land them jobs, employers feel just the opposite.

The report and the managers, who represent 52 occupations, are calling for M.B.A. programs to make soft skills training a priority in their curricula. The report, entitled “How Relevant is the M.B.A.? Assessing the Alignment of M.B.A. Curricula and Managerial Competencies,” will be unveiled in its entirety during the weekend of August 3rd in Philadelphia at the annual meeting of the Academy of Management.
